Abstract. – Book 6 of Virgil’s Aeneid is noted for two enigmatic sequences, involving the Golden Bough and the Gates of Sleep. In particular, the use of the Ivory Gate for the departure of Aeneas and the Sibyl from the underworld has been the subject of extensive study. Close examination of the portrayal of the Sibyl Deiphobe aids in offering a novel solution to the problem of the Gates. The poet’s consistent emphasis on Aeneas’ haste and preoccupation with visiting his father in Elysium is coupled with what amounts to the usurpation of the Sibyl’s role by the shade of Anchises, and the distracted Anchises’ inadvertent employment of the gate of false dreams.
